Reliquary Box
Playful Joinery and Carving
This wooden box is inspired by Medieval châsse, a house-shaped box standing on stumpy feet intended to be used as a shrine. It is crafted from standard pine floorboards and is constructed with hand-joinery, employing irregular finger joints to evoke a playful, naïve style. The roof opens by prising the finger joints apart, and a modern relic or devotional object can be held inside. Every surface is carved and incorporates motifs from a variety of European artistic traditions, including Celtic knots, Swedish wedding boxes, and British floral ornamentation.
